Pet adoption questions, answered
How much does it cost to adopt a pet in the United States?
Adoption fees in the United States typically range from $50 to $500 depending on the rescue and the animal's age. The fee almost always covers spay/neuter surgery, initial vaccinations, deworming and a microchip — several hundred dollars of care you would otherwise pay a vet for separately.
How long does pet adoption take in the United States?
Most rescues in the United States complete an adoption in one to two weeks. The usual steps are an online application, a phone or video conversation, a meet-and-greet with the animal, sometimes a home check, and then signing the adoption contract and paying the fee.
Do I apply through PawAide or the rescue?
Through the rescue. PawAide surfaces live listings so you can find the right animal quickly, but every application, fee and adoption decision is handled by the rescue or shelter that has the animal. Each listing shows that organization's name, phone and email.
What should I do right after adopting?
Book a wellness exam with a vet within the first week, get the shelter paperwork and vaccine records stored somewhere you can find them, update the microchip registration to your name, and look at pet insurance before any condition becomes pre-existing. PawAide gives you a free pet profile and records vault to keep all of it in one place.
