What to expect at dog-friendly beaches and trails
Beach and trail access for dogs is often seasonal or time-restricted — many shorelines allow dogs only outside summer hours, and some trails switch to leash-only during nesting or hunting season.
Off-leash areas are usually a marked stretch rather than the whole beach or trail system, and enforcement is real: fines are common where dogs stray past the signage.
Before you go
- •Check posted seasonal hours and any leash rules at the trailhead or beach access point.
- •Carry more water than you think you need — salt water and hot sand dehydrate dogs fast.
- •Test the sand or rock with your hand; if it is too hot for your palm, it is too hot for paws.
- •Plan for ticks, burrs, and foxtails on trails, and rinse salt and sand off after beach time.
Etiquette that keeps places pet friendly
- •Recall has to be reliable before the leash comes off in an open area.
- •Give wildlife, shorebird nesting zones, and horses a wide berth.
- •Pack out waste even on remote trails — bury-and-go isn't acceptable near water.
- •Yield on narrow trails: leash up and step aside for hikers, runners, and bikes.
