What to expect at dog-friendly restaurants and cafés
In the U.S., health codes generally keep pets out of indoor dining rooms, so "pet friendly" at a restaurant almost always means the outdoor patio, sidewalk seating, or a courtyard.
Staff will usually seat you at an end or perimeter table so your dog can tuck under and out of the server path. Patio pet access is also often weather- and season-dependent.
Before you go
- •Call ahead on weekends and holidays — many patios pause pet seating when there is a wait list.
- •Ask whether the patio is shaded and what the surface is; dark pavers can burn paws in summer.
- •Feed and walk your dog first so they arrive tired and settled rather than hungry and curious.
- •Bring a mat or towel — a familiar surface makes most dogs lie down and stay down.
Etiquette that keeps places pet friendly
- •Keep the leash short and anchored to you, never to a table or chair leg.
- •Dogs stay on the ground — not on chairs, benches, or the table.
- •Use the restaurant's pet bowl or your own; human plates and utensils are off limits.
- •If your dog barks at passing dogs or people, take a lap and come back rather than riding it out.
